MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Irvine 9, Stanford 8

STANFORD — Colin Mello’s four goals led the No. 11 Anteaters to the upset win over the No. 4 Cardinal in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation game Saturday.

The game was tied eight times before Mello scored the gamewinner with 1:57 left. Kyle Baxter added three goals and Curt Melo scored two for UCI (10-16, 2-4 in conference), which got 13 saves from Matt Garcia.

Stanford, coached by UCI alum John Vargas, a former Corona del Mar High Coach, dropped to 14-7, 4-3.

COSTA MESA — In their season opener, the Lions’ Jessica Richter led the team in scoring with 26 points while picking up six rebounds.

Rachel Besse and Lacey Burns scored 20 points each. Kelly Schmidt finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Vanguard is the NAIA’s top-ranked team.

CROSS COUNTRY

NCAA West Regional

GRESHAM, ORE. — Sophomore Laura Olvera placed third individually, helping the UC Irvine women’s cross country team to an eighth-place finish at the NCAA Cross Country West Regional, held at Blue Lake Park.

The Anteater men placed 13th overall.

Olvera helped lead the Anteater women to a team score of 264, finishing with a time of 21:16.20 and qualifying for the NCAA finals. The top four finishers from each regional who are not on qualifying teams automatically advance to the finals, held in Terre Haute, Ind. on Nov. 20. Olvera is the first UCI runner to qualify for the NCAAs since Kareen Nilsson in 2000.

Junior Sara Mickleson placed 17th (21:51.11) and will wait to see if she will receive an at-large bid today, when the rest of the NCAA field is set. Junior Marie Nguyen placed 42nd (22:31.18 42), while sophomore Emily Romo was 96th (23:31.35). Samantha Constantini finished 114th (23:44.50), Megan Fairley was 126th (23:59.33) and Erinn Kim placed 127th (24:05.22).

The UC Irvine men finished 13th with a team score of 374, with Ricky Barnes placing 34th (31:14.87) to lead UCI.

Nick Mosey followed in 45th place (31:37.07), and Tom Whelan was 92nd (33:00.63).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

UC Irvine def. UC Riverside

IRVINE — Lauren Kellerman had 19 kills in the Anteaters 30-23, 30-15, 30-25 sweep over UC Riverside in Big West Conference action.

Kristin Kelley was second on the team with nine kills, McCall Miller had eight and Trisha White finished with seven kills of her own.

Taryn Robertson led both teams with 39 assists.
