Second season begins for Laguna

Familiar foes will meet in the Laguna Beach High pool at 3:15 p.m. today as the first-round of the CIF Southern Section Division II boys’ water polo playoffs get underway.
Orange Coast League champion Laguna will host San Clemente in a first-round match-up in a pool that was the site of the first meeting this year between the schools.
That match was played on Sept. 26, and it was the home opener for the Breakers. They began their home season in impressive fashion, as Nathan McConnell netted six goals in a 14-5 win over the Tritons.
When that match-up occurred, San Clemente was ranked eighth in the Division II poll and Laguna was ninth.
As the teams prepare to meet up today for the final time this season, Laguna comes in the higher ranked team at No. 7.
San Clemente, the runner-up in the South Coast League, was not ranked in the final Division II regular season poll.
The Breakers are 19-9 overall and San Clemente is 9-18, and both teams enter the playoffs coming off a loss. Last Friday, Laguna, then ranked No. 4, fell on the road to Mission Viejo, 13-9. The loss cost the Breakers a No. 4 seeding in the playoffs. San Clemente, meanwhile, was knocked off Saturday by El Toro, 19-13.
“Even though we beat them earlier in the year, they’ll come here ready to play us,” Laguna Coach Rick McKee said of the Tritons. A Laguna win today would send the Breakers on the road Tuesday for a second-round match.
