A Phoenix Police commander was hired as Costa Mesa’s new police chief Wednesday, ending a four-month search.
Phoenix Police Department Commander Christopher Shawkey was named the fifth police chief in the city’s history.
Shawkey, 47, a graduate of Arizona State University, has 25 years of experience in law enforcement. He was culled from a field of 44 candidates and was chosen over the other finalist, Long Beach Deputy Police Chief Timothy Jackman.
Costa Mesa City Manager Allan Roeder said Shawkey’s starting date with Costa Mesa has not been set. He will take over from interim Chief Steven Staveley, who has headed the department since former Chief John Hensley retired June 30.
