HUNTINGTON BEACH CITY COUNCIL PREVIEW

Here are a few items the council will consider Monday:

BRIDGE SCRAPPED

Council members will vote on approving an agreement with neighboring cities to amend a plan for a future bridge at Garfield and Gisler avenues.

WHAT TO EXPECT

The agreement between the cities of Huntington Beach, Costa Mesa, Fountain Valley and the Orange County Transportation Authority will get rid of the bridge and instead put in road improvements to facilitate traffic flow. The bridge was proposed to be built over the Santa Ana River at Garfield and Gisler avenues but was expected to be a costly project. The pact now calls for a series of improvements on the streets to ease traffic, instead of building the bridge.

REHAB PROJECTS

The City Council will approve about $6 million in project plans, as well as award a construction contract for the Adams Avenue, Bolsa Chica Street and Goldenwest Street rehabilitation projects.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Residents are eager for work to begin on these projects to improve major thoroughfares in the city. Council members will also vote on awarding the construction contract to All American Asphalt company. The projects were stalled due to delays in distributing federal highway funds that provide more than $2 million in grants toward project costs.

STEAKHOUSE PERMIT

The council postponed approval of a new restaurant, Ponderosa Steakhouse, that was set to open in the Pierside Pavilion in downtown Huntington Beach. The planning commission had earlier approved the restaurant, with planning commissioners Flossie Horgan and Elizabeth Burnett voting against the project.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Councilwoman Debbie Cook appealed the permit approved by the Planning Commission for the steak restaurant after several Pierside Pavilion residents expressed concerns about noise and other issues over the location and nature of the restaurant.
