Newport-Mesa Seahawks 8, Baldwin Hills Bruins 6: Kory Cablay had four tackles for a loss, Jeff Carlyle had two fumble recoveries and Garrett Farthing added a safety as the Seahawks defense shined on Oct. 14. Also leading the defensive attack were Kurt Walde, Colby Koste, Levi Stillman, Kenny Drinnon, Taro Doone, Kyle Benter, Adrian Marin, Dylan Rand-Luby, Cayman Carter, Todd Jarvis, Bronson Gilbert and Chris Johnstone.
After Farthing’s safety, Cablay returned the ensuing free kick 32 yards to set up a rushing touchdown by Carlyle and give Newport-Mesa an 8-0 lead.
The Bruins were driving late in the game, but Doone sacked the quarterback and forced a fumble, which Johnstone recovered for the Seahawks (5-1). Baldwin Hills eventually scored on its next drive, but Walde blocked the two-point conversion to preserve the win.
The Seahawks’ offense, led by Chase Forrest, Doone, Gilbert, Walde, Max Meisenheimer, Taylor Parks, Drinnon and Alex Losoya dominated the line of scrimmage and powered the Seahawks’ running game.
The third-quarter offense of Drinnon, Walde, Christian Abbey, Victor Valladares, Luke Burnicle, Doone, JP Pilz, Daemon Kane, Nick Gomez, Rafael Corvera, Devin Magana and Blake Bowie played well as they went back and forth with the Bruins.

Newport Sailors 42, Montebello Pride 40: The locals won the tournament final Oct. 15 to claim the sixth-grade division of the NJB Fall Finale Tournament at Saddleback High.
Newport’s Drew Olson led all scorers with 21 points and Chris Okey had six points, including the go-ahead basket with 16 seconds left.
Blake Motal and Kris Picarelli each had six points for the Sailors, while Derek Kula had two points and James Newman had one point.
Newman and Kula led a smothering Newport defense that had more than 20 steals.
