WALNUT — The Newport Harbor High girls’ team finished second in the Division II red race Saturday.
Melissa Mead led the Sailors, finishing ninth in 18 minutes, 54 seconds. Taylor Bryson (19:05) and Sophia Ditty (19:06) finished 16th and 17th, respectively.
Lauren Maddox (25th in 19:36), Desiree Alexander (36th in 19:54) and, making her varsity debut, freshman Kelly DeYoung (57th in 20:29) also competed.
The Sailors return to action in the Sunset League Finals Saturday at Central Park.
BOYS’ CROSS COUNTRY

WALNUT — The Newport Harbor High boys’ team finished fifth in the Division II blue race Saturday.
Russ Nelson was the Sailors’ top finisher in 21st place with a time of 16 minutes, 38 seconds. Scott Figueroa’s 16:52 was good enough for 29th place.
Chris Lewis finished two seconds and two spots behind Figueroa.
Mike Puncel (17:09) cracked the top 50, finishing in 49th place. Jake Dawson (17:18) finished in 59th place.
The Sailors need a third-place finish to reach the playoffs when they return to action in the Sunset League Finals Saturday at Central Park.
