Golden State Athletic Conference Championships

FRESNO — The Vanguard University women’s team recorded its highest finish at a GSAC event, taking third place, and the men came in fifth.

Grace Jepngetich won the women’s title, finishing in 17 minutes and 30 seconds. Rebecca Sopp (seventh in 18:42), Olivia Amstad’s (12th in 19:01), Jewel Butler (29th in 20:06) and Kelsie Davis (40th in 20:41) also contributed.

For the men, Jason Valenzuela finished 10th in 25:53 and Travis Hartanov 11th in 25:56.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Vanguard def. Azusa Pacific

COSTA MESA — Kelsey Wirt recorded 30 kills in the Lions’ 18-30, 30-27, 30-26, 31-33, 15-13 Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Kim Wynn had 17 kills and Michal Shortridge added 13 against the Cougars, ranked No. 12 in the NAIA.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 2, Hope International 0

COSTA MESA — Heather Hutton became the Lions’ all-time points leader with 96 in their Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

She scored on a pass from Rachel Housepian with 3:04 remaining.

Also, Cassie Rodeiro headed in Katie Guernsey’s pass. Goalie Marissa Swift had four saves for Vanguard (10-3-2, 4-3 in conference).

MEN’S SOCCER

Vanguard 3, Hope International 1

COSTA MESA — Christopher Leiva led the Lions with two goals in their Golden State Athletic Conference win Saturday.

Andrew Elliot scored on an assist from Sem Lopez for Vanguard (11-2-2, 5-1-2 in conference). Lions’ goalie William Johnson had three saves.

UC Irvine 0, Cal Poly 0 (2 OT)

SAN LUIS OBISPO — Goalie Kenny Schoeni had six saves in the Anteaters’ Big West Conference match Saturday.

Schoeni tied Ryan Mathy’s 2005 single-season record of seven shutouts, and tied Mike Gartlan for sixth all-time at UCI.

The Anteaters (10-3-3, 4-2-1 in conference) are now in second place in the Big West with 13 points, behind UC Santa Barbara (15 points).

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Cal State Fullerton def. UC Irvine

FULLERTON — Kristin Kelley had 12 kills and McCall Miller had 11 in the Anteaters’ 30-23, 30-27, 30-22 Big West Conference loss Saturday.

Christa Conom led the Anteaters (6-14, 1-5 in conference) with 26 assists.

MEN’S WATER POLO

UC Berkeley 15, UC Irvine 3

IRVINE — Colin Mello scored twice in the Anteaters’ Mountain Pacific Sports Federation loss to the second-ranked Bears Saturday.

Taylor Wells added one goal for UCI (6-12, 0-1 in conference). Matt Garcia finished with eight saves.
