Corona del Mar

All-American Tournament

NEWPORT BEACH — The Corona del Mar High girls tennis team has advanced to today’s semifinals against Dana Hills at 2:30 p.m. at the Balboa Bay Racquet Club.

The Sea Kings’ blue team, consisting of Jill Damion, Cierra Gaytan-Leach, Hailey Hogan, Melissa Matsuoka and Hayley and Miranda Young, defeated La Quinta, 9-0.

Corona del Mar, ranked No. 1 in CIF Southern Section Division I, also beat Palos Verdes, 9-0.

Corona del Mar’s white team lost to Troy, 9-3, but defeated Sage Hill, 8-1. Sage Hill lost twice Friday, falling, 9-0, to Monta Vista of Cupertino, the three-time defending NorCal Champion.

The Sea Kings’ white team plays in the consolation semifinals at Los Caballeros Tennis Center today at 1:30 p.m. against La Costa Canyon. Sage Hill faces Mater Dei at 2 p.m. at the Costa Mesa Tennis Center.

In the other championship semifinal, Troy will face Peninsula, the defending tournament champion.

Corona del Mar Coach Brian Ricker said the tournament would be cancelled if there is too much rain.

Unlike traditional high-school match scoring, the CdM All-American Tournament’s matches have six singles and three doubles sets, each worth a point.

Players may play in both singles and doubles.

There is no official CIF state girls’ tennis championship, but Ricker has done his best to assemble a comparable level of talent for the tournament.

“I think we have the best teams in the state,” Ricker said. “It’s kind of like a California state championship, and that’s exciting for tennis.”
