AZUSA — Daniel Ybarra scored in the 18th minute to give the Lions the upset win over the second-ranked team in the NAIA on Saturday.

Vanguard (9-2, 3-1 in conference), which suffered a loss to Concordia Wednesday, is ranked No. 11.

APU (7-2-1, 2-1-1) was held scoreless for just the second time this season.

WOMEN’S SOCCER

Azusa Pacific 1, Vanguard 0

Karen Lawrence scored a golden goal for the No. 2-ranked Cougars, who avoided the shutout to the No. 25 Lions on Saturday. Marissa Swift finished with 10 saves for the Lions (8-2-1, 2-2-2 in conference).

Triton Classic

LA JOLLA — Samantha Costantini was the top performer for the UC Irvine women’s cross country team and Russell Bush led the men’s squad Saturday.

Costantini finished 14th over the 6,000-meter course with a time of 23 minutes, 32.5 seconds. Elaine Gillespie was 24th (24:01.3) and Megan Fairley placed 28th (24:09.4).For the UCI men’s team, Bush was 23rd in 26:57.6 over 8,000 meters and Kareem Barghouti placed 28th in 27:03.5.

Vanguard Invitational

COSTA MESA — Vanguard sophomore Grace Jepnegetich won the women’s individual title, in 17:51, a new meet record. She led the Lions to fifth.

The Vanguard men were led by Travis Hartanov, who came in seventh in 26:34. Jason Thomas was 17th in 27:23.

WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL

Pacific def. UC Irvine

IRVINE — The Anteaters’ Kristin Kelley recorded a team-high 16 kills and Lauren Kellerman added 15 in Pacific’s 30-24, 30-25, 28-30, 30-17, Big West Conference victory.

McCall Miller produced a career-high 18 digs for UCI (4-13, 0-4 in conference).

Vanguard def. Hope

FULLERTON — Vanguard’s Kelsey Wirt had 20 kills and 22 digs as the Lions rallied for a 21-30, 25-30, 30-17, 30-25, 15-7 Golden State Athletic Conference victory Saturday.
