Free flu shots will be available for older people, children and people with chronic medical conditions at two clinics in Laguna Beach sponsored by South Coast Medical Center. No appointment is necessary.
The first clinic will take place from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 21, at South Coast Medical Center, 31872 Coast Highway.
The second clinic will be from 8 a.m. to noon, Saturday, Oct. 27, at the Laguna Beach Senior Center, 384 Legion St.
South Coast Medical Center receives the vaccine from the Orange County Health Care Agency and follows the health care agency’s guidelines for distribution of the vaccine.
The vaccine is for those individuals at greatest risk of contracting the flu. Immunizations are available for anyone 50 years or older, children 6 months to 5 years of age and any adult or child with chronic medical conditions.

Public forum set on senior/community center
Laguna Beach Seniors will host a public forum addressing questions from the community regarding the planned new Suzi Q Center, Monday, Oct. 16, from 1 to to 3 p.m. at the Veterans’ Memorial Community Center, 384 Legion St.
Representatives from the Seniors board of directors, the City of Laguna Beach and LPA Architects will be on hand for this fourth meeting regarding the proposed senior center.

Ballot issue ‘pros and cons’ topic of voter forum
There are 13 measures on the November ballot, including a Legislative Constitutional Amendment; four bond measures; and various initiative statutes and constitutional amendments.
As a public service, the Social Action Committee of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of Laguna Beach and the League of Women Voters, Laguna Beach Unit, will present “Pros and Cons on the Ballot Issues.”
All are invited to attend this meeting at 9:15 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 14, at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 429 Cypress, Laguna Beach.

Council candidates’ forum slated Oct. 16
Top of the World Neighborhood Assn. and Temple Hills Community Assn. are co-hosting a City Council candidates’ forum at 7:30 p.m. Monday, Oct. 16, at Council chambers, 505 Forest Ave., Laguna Beach.
The public is invited to attend and ask questions.
Marion Jacobs will chair the forum, which will begin with candidate statements at 7:30 p.m., limited to two minutes each.
After the opening statements, the public will be invited to ask questions of any candidate. Questions to be limited to one minute. Each response is to be limited to one and a half minutes.

Parade Assn. seeks help for March 3 march
The Laguna Beach Patriots Day Parade Assn. has started organizing the 41st annual parade to be held on Saturday, March 3, 2007, beginning at 11 a.m.
Officers for 2007 are: President Charles Quilter, 1st Vice President Douglas Miller, 2nd Vice President Marvin Johnson, Secretary Jean Law and Treasurer Sandi Werthe.
The parade theme will be “Proudly We Hail” in honor of the 76th anniversary of our national anthem, made official by law on March 3, 1931.
The Parade Assn. needs volunteers to organize the event, and work on parade day, marshaling and passing out programs.

Four women to be honored
The American Assn. of University Women will honor Janice Johnson; Rev. Virginia Wheeler; Barbara Hamkalo, PhD.; and Eleanor Finney at their eighth annual “Women of Achievement” dinner Monday, Oct. 23, at Tivoli Too!, 777 Laguna Canyon Rd., Laguna Beach.
Johnson is being honored for her leadership in the arts, having served in leadership roles for the Pacific Symphony Board, the Performance Arts Center Guilds, South Coast Repertory, the National Symphony in Washington, D.C., and the Laguna College of Art and Design.
She was also on the boards of the AIDS Service Foundation and Planned Parenthood.
Rev. Wheeler is being honored for her community and world outreach through her ministry at the Laguna United Methodist Church.
Under her leadership, work teams of community members have built churches and community centers, and developed cultural connections in Cuba, Costa Rica and Zimbabwe.
Hamkalo has been a leader in science research at UC Irvine.
Finney has been a leader in women’s issues for many causes as an active member of the Laguna Beach branch of AAUW, where she serves as chair of the Women’s Issues committee.
The evening will begin at 5:30 p.m. with a social hour, and dinner will be served at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets are $45, including dinner. Profits will go to various projects for girls in Laguna Beach.
Reservations are needed no later than Oct. 18.
Free parking is provided at the Festival of Arts parking lot.
