Laguna’s tennis aces win 14U
Laguna Beach Breakers Junior Team Tennis launched its season Saturday and two of its teams, the 14-and-Under and 12-and-Under squads, won and lost their matches, respectively.
Play in each match consisted of six singles and three doubles matches. Division standings are based on games won.
14-and-Under Division
Laguna opened its home stand against Turtle Rock and won on sets, 7-2, and 51-23 in games played.
Playing in the top spot for Laguna, Drew Kanner defeated Ahrian Shahabi, 6-2. Also getting singles wins for Laguna were Bryce Bash (def. Nelson Chen, 6-1), Sammy Witte (def. James Andreini 6-0), Beau Heussenstamm (def. Taishi Matsumoto, 6-2), Will Reeves (def. Sonal Jessel, 6-4) and Monika Prokes (def. Jessica Kay, 6-4).
In doubles action, Breck and Bryce Bash won by a 6-1 score over Shahabi/Chen, Kate Rogers and Monika Prokes defeated Kay/Jessel, 6-1.
12-and-Under Division
The Breakers, a team composed of Kira Hamilton, Adrien Azera, Dino Romeo, Sofia Levin, Noah Blanton, Will Pennington and Jordan Lomonaco, lost 52-14 in games to Balboa Bay Club.
Laguna entered the match short one player, and was forced to forfeit three matches.
Azera showed his fortitude by rallying from a 4-3 deficit to win his match, 6-4. Levin also fought hard in her match but eventually lost, 6-5, in a tiebreaker.
