Breakers look to rebound tonight

The Laguna Beach High football team will be looking to get back into the win column tonight when it travels to Santa Ana to take on Segerstrom.

Kickoff for the nonleague game is 7 p.m.

Laguna suffered its second loss of the season when the Breakers fell to visiting Santiago of Garden Grove last week, 33-6.

The Breakers’ two losses — to Corona del Mar and Santiago — have come against teams ranked in the Southern Division top 10 poll.

Against Santiago, Laguna fell behind, 33-0, after three quarters before senior Marshall Thomas took in a 13-yard touchdown pass from sophomore Andrew Paddon to put the Breakers on the scoreboard.

Paddon and Laguna starting quarterback Charley Bowman combined for nearly 200 passing yards.

Segerstrom is playing its first season of varsity football. The Jaguars are 0-2 but were competitive last week in a 27-21 loss to Bolsa Grande. Their other loss is to Laguna Hills (54-13).

Segerstrom favors the running game and is led by sophomore Francisco Partida who rushed for 115 yards and caught a touchdown pass last week against Bolsa Grande.

Game highlights: With Laguna Beach’s rushing game stifled by Santiago of Garden Grove, the Breakers turned to its passing game and Thomas responded with 127 receiving yards and a touchdown. The 13-yard TD pass he took in from sophomore Andrew Paddon was the only time Laguna would score in a 33-6 nonleague loss to the Cavaliers.

Coach’s comments: “In my three years here as head coach, this is the single best performance I’ve witnessed,” Jimmy Nolan said. “Marshall was the real deal. He played every down of that game, including special teams. He led us in tackles and had well over 100 yards in receiving, as well as our lone touchdown. He also runs the plays back and forth to the huddle. He can barely breathe, yet he found a way to be the toughest competitor on the field. It was something I’ll always remember. He spent it all on Friday night.”
