Oilers smash Diablos

The Huntington Beach girls’ tennis team won seven of nine in singles action and defeated visiting Mission Viejo, 10-8, in nonleague play.

Juniors Jennifer Heumann and Monica Stupaczuk, the Oilers’ top two singles players, each swept their opponents. Freshman Kala Johnson, playing No. 3 singles, also picked up a point with a win.

In doubles action, the Oilers picked up three more points as their No. 1 team of senior Christina Le and junior Diana Le also posted a sweep of the Diablos.

In girls’ volleyball:

Huntington won three of the five matches it played last weekend at the Dave Mohs Memorial Tournament.

The Oilers defeated Irvine (25-18, 25-16) and Foothill (25-27, 25-23, 15-13) before falling to Murrieta Valley (13-25, 21-25). The came back to sweep Calvary Chapel (25-23, 25-13), but then lost in three to Long Beach Jordon (20-25, 25-20, 12-15).

In field hockey:

Edison dropped two games last week, falling at home to Harvard/Westlake, 2-1, in nonleague play, and 4-2 in its Sunset League opener against defending CIF champion Marina.

Junior Lauren Barteske scored the lone Edison goal in the loss to Harvard/Westlake. Junior Karisa Sadler and senior Lauren Ardis scored goals in the setback to Marina.
