H.B. routs Ravens, 52-8

The Huntington Beach Jr. Midget Oilers made their 2006 home debut a smashing success Saturday as they overwhelmed the Tustin Ravens, 52-8, in Jr. All-American Football action.

The scoring started early for the Oilers (1-1) as they capped a 10-play drive with a one-yard touchdown run by James Marcoly. On Tustin’s ensuing possession, Huntington’s Mitch Huffman came up with a huge interception and 65-yard return for the second score of the game. Huffman powered his way to the end zone by breaking six tackles on the return and got a key block from Dennis Macarthy.

Huffman also led the Oilers’ rushing attack. Behind the blocking of James Olivé and Harley Schoffner, he rushed for 116 yards and finished with three touchdowns.

Josh Gutierrez also came up big on the ground attack, using the blocking of Jake Dunneback and Justin Misenholder to grind out tough yardage. Huntington strolled to a 32-8 halftime advantage, the scoring blitz capped by a 40-yard TD pass from Christian Montano to Carlos Ancona.

The Oilers’ defense stifled Tustin throughout the game and limited the Ravens to just two first downs. Huntington was led on that side of the ball by Sean Parker and Max Berdis, and linebacker Mike Congelliere had eight tackles.

Aaron Sutton had three tackles on special teams play.

“I was very pleased with our team effort,” Oilers Coach Thomas Brown said. “The ‘O’ line came out firing on the first series and set the tone. I am very proud of our young men today.”

Huntington will take on Irvine, which defeated Mission Viejo last weekend, at 7 p.m. Saturday at Irvine High.
