A young Costa Mesa woman was recovering in an area hospital after her throat was sliced several times allegedly by her ex-boyfriend, who remained at large as of late Wednesday, police said.
“It was obvious from the wounds that he was trying to kill her,” Costa Mesa Police Sgt. Marty Carver said.
The 21-year-old woman was found bleeding in the street after officers were called to the 2200 block of Rutgers Drive at 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, police said.
She had two large cuts across her throat and also suffered defensive wounds on her hands, Carver said. The woman, who is not being identified by police, told officers that her ex-boyfriend, Arnufo Andrade Gonzalez, tried to kill her, authorities said.
The woman was in a carport talking to another man when she saw Gonzalez drive up in his car and demand that she get in, police said. When she refused, he jumped out and threw her into an oil spill on the ground and cut her throat, Carver said.
Gonzalez, 34, left the area before police arrived, authorities said. He is believed to be driving an early 1990s-model gray Chevrolet Cavalier.
The weapon was not recovered, but police believe it is a small-blade knife, Carver said.
The woman and Gonzalez have a young child together. Police have no record of being called to either residence for reports of domestic disputes, Carver said.
It’s unknown if Gonzalez is still in the area, but he should be considered dangerous, Carver said. Anyone with information about the attack should call Costa Mesa Police Det. Julian Trevino, (714) 754-5356.
