Santa Ana Tournament
SANTA ANA — The Pirates defeated Citrus, 30-28, in the title match Saturday to win the event for the third straight season, despite the absence of sophomore star Kiwi Winkler.
With Winkler tending to a family emergency, freshmen Chelsea Spadaro, Jacqi Reed and Jenna Harp all stepped up to lead the Pirates.
Spadaro, a setter, earned tournament MVP honors while Harp switched from right side to outside hitter to fill Winkler’s spot.
Harp had the final two kills to allow the Pirates to top Citrus, which led, 15-11 and 27-24.
Harp and Reed were named all-tournament.
OCC defeated Fullerton, 30-22, in the semifinals and earned a 30-11 quarterfinal triumph over Saddleback.
Santa Clara def. UC Irvine
STANFORD, Calif. — The Broncos, coached by Estancia High product Jon Wallace, dispatched the Anteaters, 30-17, 30-20, 30-18, at the Stanford Tournament on Saturday.
Lauren Kellerman had 13 kills, while Devon Southerland added 10 for UCI (3-8). Taryn Robertson had 31 assists for the Anteaters, who dropped both matches in the tournament.

Aztec Invitational
SAN DIEGO — Vanguard University sophomore Grace Jepngetich won the women’s open race Saturday and Lions’ junior Jason Valenzuela was second in the men’s open division of the Aztec Invitational at Balboa Park.
Jepngetich completed the 3.1-mile course in 17 minutes, 57 seconds.
Valenzuela, an Orange Coast College transfer, finished the 8K course in 26:55, behind former Vanguard, OCC and Estancia High standout Humberto Rojas (26:33), who ran unattatched.
MEN’S WATER POLO
NorCal Tournament
STANFORD, Calif. — UC Irvine defeated UC Santa Cruz, 9-5, and lost to UC San Diego, 10-8, in tournament action Saturday at Stanford.
Junior Colin Mellow scored a game-high five goals against UC Santa Cruz, while junior Matt Garcia had 16 saves.
The No. 12-ranked Anteaters lost in overtime to UCSD, the third overtime loss this season for UCI (3-4).

Vanguard 1, Westminster 0
COSTA MESA — Sophomore Tom Culver converted an assist from junior Daniel Ybarra in the 83rd minute for the difference in this nonconference game Saturday at Vanguard.
Sophomore William Johnson made two saves to preserve the shutout for the Lions (4-1).
