Local club wins tournamentThe MK Soccer Club, based in Newport Beach, won the Toyota of Orange soccer tournament championship for the 13-and-under division on Sunday in Anaheim.
MKSC, which was made up mostly of athletes from the Newport-Mesa area, topped Corona in the boys’ 13 final, 4-3, in overtime.
The score was tied, 2-2, after regulation and 3-3 after two 10-minute overtimes.
But MKSC goalie Steven Barrera blocked Corona penalty kicks to give his team the title.
MKSC went 3-1 in the tournament, also beating the Palmdale Thunder and the Red Titans.
Along with Barrera, solid defenders for the team were Drew Blumenthal, Dara Diba, David Vorona and Blake Myers.
Midfielders were Caleb Candelaria, Matt Francini, Matt Laughlin, Connor Morrill, Kent Smith and Cameron Souri.
Scoring on offense were Peter Marquez and Tanner Grandstaff.
MKSC was coached by Omid Namazi, Bahman Zamanian and Mehdi Khakpour.
Slammers grab silverThe under-9 Slammers Football Club finished second at the Cabo Cup soccer tournament in San Juan Capistrano, completed Aug. 12. at JSerra School.
The team, made up of mostly Newport Beach residents, won its first three games. The Slammers topped West Coast FC United of South Bay, 5-2, the RB Renegades of Santa Barbara, 4-1, then routed the ISC Strikers of Irvine, 4-0.
The Strikers then lost in a championship-game rematch against the Renegades, 3-2.
The Slammers roster included Joe Alverado, Ethan Wien, Jack Denning, Cameron Jabara, Drew Raguse, Patrick Jennings, Tanner Epp, Brian Chelf, Jason Simaan, Andrew Bligh, Shane Gooding and Stephen Von Der Ahe.
The Slammers were coached by Ralph Lopez.
GOLF
Milner third at juniorsNewport Beach’s Jessica Milner shot a five-over-par 75 to finish third in the girls’ 15- to 18-year-old division at the 17th annual Costa Mesa Junior Golf Championship, held Aug. 15 at the Costa Mesa Country Club’s Mesa Linda Course.
Milner, who will be a senior at Corona del Mar High, was the top local finisher at the event.
Jonna Kim, who also attends CdM, tied for sixth in the girls’ 15-18 division with Costa Mesa resident Lauren Draganza, who will play this fall at Newport Harbor High. Both shot 82.
Jacob Knapp of Costa Mesa, who won the boys’ 11-and-under division in last year’s tournament, finished tied for sixth in the boys’ 12-13 division this year with a 75.
Mike Moorhead of Newport Beach (97) finished 14th.
BASKETBALL
Longhorns hook titleThe Newport Beach Longhorns won the second- and third-grade title on Aug. 17 in the Boys and Girls Club of Costa Mesa basketball playoffs.
Newport Beach beat the Bears in double overtime on Aug. 16 before coming into the final against an undefeated Long Beach team.
But the Longhorns, using the outside shooting of Connor Kincaid and the tough inside game of Chase Garbers and Kingston McCarthy, won the championship with a 25-21 victory.
Also contributing to the victory were Ben Crawford, Patrick Kelly, David Lee, Tucker Lowell, Christina Reimers and Jack Woodworth.
Newport Beach was coached by Mike Kincaid and Grant Garbers.
