The Sept. 13 Speak Up Newport program will be a City Council candidates forum. As there are 12 candidates running for five contested seats, the program will consist of two, one-hour sessions, with District 1 candidates Michael Henn, Marcia Dossey, Brenda Martin and Jack Wu and District 4’s Leslie Daigle and Barbara Venezia from 6 to 7 p.m. and District 5’s Robert Schoonmaker and Edward Selich; District 6’s Nancy Gardner and Dick Nichols; and District 7’s Dolores Otting and Keith Curry from 7 to 8 p.m.
The meeting will be held at the Newport Beach Yacht Club, 1099 Bayside Drive. It will start at 5 p.m. with appetizers and a cash bar, followed by the program at 6 p.m. Additional information is available at (949) 224-2266 or check the website at www.speakupnewport.org.
GOODBYE CHARLIE BROWNMembers of the Exchange Club of Newport Harbor are mourning the passing of longtime member Charlie Brown on Aug. 14. Brown joined the club in 1961 and served in a number of offices and board positions including bulletin editor for 15 years. His careers included serving the U.S. Army, playing pro baseball with the Pittsburgh Pirates, real estate developer and real estate agent. Ethical, humorous, successful and a good friend are words club members use to describe Brown. He will be missed. Condolences to his family and friends.
SECOND ANNUAL CONFERENCE FOR WOMENThe second annual Orange County Conference for Women hosted by the city of Newport Beach is set for Sept. 21. The half-day conference, to be held at the Balboa Bay Club & Resort from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., will include a luncheon with a keynote address by the Honorable Nancy Wieben Stock, presiding judge of the Orange County Superior Court. Individual tickets are available for $90 until Sept. 8, 2006. After that date, tickets are $100 each.
