Candlelight vigil for ‘Bubba’ Kapko
A candlelight vigil for Brian “Bubba” Kapko of Costa Mesa will be at 11 p.m. Sunday at the end of the Huntington Beach Pier.
Kapko died in Boulder, Colo., Aug. 28, 2005, at the age of 19 when his car was hit by two shooting suspects driving a stolen Honda. He was a graduate of Estancia High School, had attended Orange Coast College and was set to attend Johnson & Wales University in Denver.
All candles will be lighted at 11 p.m. near Ruby’s Diner, and a few people may speak about Kapko. Please bring your own candles.
Street-closure requests are due Monday
Costa Mesa residents who wish to block off their street for a Labor Day block party must file their applications with the city by Monday.
The city allows residents to close their streets for up to six hours twice a year — the Fourth of July and Labor Day. Residents are required to complete an application package and provide proof of liability insurance coverage for the event.
Applications are available upon request by phone, mail or in person at the city manager’s office, (714) 754-5327 or by visiting www.ci.costa-mesa .ca.us.
Local honored by women’s group
Costa Mesa resident Stephanie Campbell will be honored Saturday at the Women For: Orange County’s 26th Suffrage Day Celebration lunch at the University Club at UC Irvine.
Campbell is the president and founder of the Orange County Chapter of Americans United for Separation of Church and State. She also served as a member of the Newport-Mesa Unified School District’s superintendent selection advisory council earlier this year.
Women For: Orange County is a Democratic women’s group. The lunch is $40 per person, and doors open at 11 a.m.
Pioneer store to host sports-TV personalities
On Saturday, the first Pioneer electronics store in the United States will host Chris Rose and John Salley from Fox Sports’ “The Best Damn Sports Show Period” from 2 to 4 p.m. at the South Coast Plaza store.
The store features home and car entertainment systems including plasma TVs, satellite radios and all the other gadgets and gizmos that may accompany those.
The TV hosts will discuss their experience with high-definition electronics and will help customers rev up for the upcoming football season and baseball playoffs.
There will be a giant slot machine, and guests will have the chance to win prizes, including a Pioneer home theater system and a portable satellite radio player.
