The following is from the Aug.14 meeting of the Laguna Beach Arts Commission:
The commission turned down an offer of two sculptures from the estate of the late Lew Geiser, citing safety, locational and maintenance concerns. As no one entered the Heisler Park temporary sculpture competition, the commission extended the deadline to Sept. 22, the same date as the “Postcards from Laguna” mural competition deadline. The commission discussed what to do with the current “Postcards from Laguna” murals, but has not come to a decision yet. They will be taken down when new selections are chosen for the site, but the Commission opted to wait until they see the murals’ condition before determining whether to store, display or destroy them. The commission discussed a potential sculpture competition for Crescent Bay Park, where an existing memorial plaque would need to be moved to facilitate the sculpture. The city has already received permission from the family to move the plaque. The exhibition of a temporary sculpture at 211 N. Coast Highway was extended by six months. Vice Chair Mike Tauber noted that the Festival of Arts’ “Art in a Box” auction earned $7,000 more in revenues than last year’s “Tie-One-On” auction, and that one-fifth of the money raised was from out-of-state residents. He also noted that about 50 people attended the recent “Music in the Mosaics” concert, and that he hopes other locations in the city will be considered as locations for future concerts.
