Four City Council seats and the city attorney’s position are up for election Nov. 7. All the positions are four-year terms.

With Mayor Dave Sullivan’s decision not to seek reelection, the deadline to file for the council was extended to 5 p.m. Wednesday.

The candidates below filed nomination papers:

City Council

  • Joe Carchio, owner of Jersey Joe’s Italian eatery, lost 2002 Council elections by narrow margin.
  • Gil Coerper (incumbent), a retired Huntington Beach police officer, if reelected would serve as mayor next year.
  • Cathy Green (incumbent), nurse, running for second term
  • Jill Hardy (incumbent), school teacher, running for second term
  • Flossie Horgan, planning commissioner, Bolsa Chica Land Trust co-founder and a biology professor.
  • Joe Shaw, owner of California Greetings and Surf City USA stores on Main Street.
  • Norm “Firecracker” Westwell, a business owner and politically-active resident, finished seventh in 2002 Council elections.

  • Jennifer McGrath (incumbent), running unopposed
