SOUNDING OFF:Time to see how center would be built

As the discussion regarding the proposed senior center in Central Park continues, we want to join with those who are in favor of this project. It is, quite literally, in our backyard — and we want it there. We think it is the best possible location within the city.

And that being emphatically said, we have a suggestion: If we are going to construct a large building in such a beautiful and natural setting, it is also time to think about how it will be constructed.

There are many building products available today composed of recycled materials. There are many innovations in terms of passive solar energy and the use of natural breezes and light to reduce the cost of energy. It is already a fact that the landscaping will use California native plants, which will save on water resources.

We would like to see the city build an earth-friendly structure that supports the ecology of the area. It would stand as an example to other communities that we can find ways to build public buildings with the utmost care for the environment.
