The Adult Day Services of Orange County, an Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center in Huntington Beach, has appointed several members to its board of directors: Sally Afable and her husband Richard Afable, who is the president and chief executive of Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian in Newport Beach; Laguna Niguel elder law attorney Fay Blix; neurologist Scott Ferer; Independent Publisher Tom Johnson; and long-time volunteer Mary Lou Shattuck.
“Personally experiencing the devastation that Alzheimer’s disease caused within my family made working with this organization a natural fit,” Sally Afable said in a news release.
Blix, who provides legal and estate planning services to families, said many families are unaware of adult day care. The Adult Day Services center is a state-designated Alzheimer’s Day Care Resource Center for Orange County.
“I believe the center serves a growing community that has little options to turn to,” said Johnson, who also is the publisher of the Daily Pilot in Costa Mesa and Newport Beach and the Laguna Beach Coastline-Pilot.
Shattuck, a Huntington Beach resident and former grade school teacher, has been volunteering for the center for several years. She is the auction chairwoman for a Gathering of Friends and is an active fund-raiser for the center.
The center, on Indianapolis Avenue, specializes in helping families care for loved ones suffering from Alzheimer’s and other dementias.
New Wells Fargo store opens — More than 700 people attended Wells Fargo’s newest store opening celebrations in Huntington Beach, with several City Council members in attendance. Council members Jill Hardy, Cathy Green and Don Hansen attended festivities for the sixth Fargo store in Huntington Beach at Brookhurst and Adams avenues.
San Francisco-based Wells Fargo donated $1,000 checks to the Surfrider Foundation, the Huntington Valley Boys and Girls Club, Literacy Volunteers of America and Wheels 2 Water.
“With this money, we are now able to purchase new wet suits, life jackets and surfboards for 30 to 40 surfers who are wheelchair-bound,” Wheels 2 Water founder Travis Tremble said in a news release. “With sponsors like Wells Fargo, we also have funds to put toward spinal cord research and will someday see our athletes walk to the water themselves.”
Wells Fargo is the fifth-largest bank in the United States.
Fargo also presented Anji Clemens of Edison High School with a check for $1,000.
The 4,600-square-foot store will be staffed by 10 employees along with an on-site home mortgage consultant and financial planner. The store hours will be from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturdays. The store celebrations included a trademark Wells Fargo stagecoach, food, prize giveaways, face painting and other family activities.
Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce members as well as its vice president Linda Martin dedicated the store along with Wells Fargo market president Robbin Preciado and other Wells Fargo staff members.
First phase of Bushard trunk project completed — The Orange County Sanitation District has completed the first phase of the Bushard Trunk Sewer Replacement Project, stretching from Panacea Drive to Atlanta Avenue. The work was completed a month ahead of schedule although construction is continuing on Bushard Street between Atlanta Avenue to Indianapolis Avenue through fall 2006.
The closure will continue on Indianapolis Avenue to Adams through winter 2006.
“We are extremely pleased to have completed the first segment one month ahead of schedule, which has lessened the impacts to the residents adjacent to the construction,” said David Ludwin, Orange County Sanitation District Director of Engineering, in a news release.
Sanitation district officials have been putting in place a new sewer line, starting from its plant along Brookhurst Street, Banning Avenue and Bushard Street in Huntington Beach. The major sewer line serves Fountain Valley, Westminster, Garden Grove, Stanton, Fullerton and Buena Park. The entire project is slated to be completed by summer 2007.
Surfing Walk of Fame to go online — Main Street’s Surfing Walk of Fame will now be available on the Internet. The Walk of Fame is the first such national sidewalk memorial to the surfing industry.

The website will carry details about the annual selection process. Candidates undergo a careful selection process with review of their contributions to the surfing industry 10 years prior to their induction. For more information, visit www.surfingwalkoffame.com.
