SWIM CONFERENCE

The Newport Hills Killer Whales defeated the Lake Forest II Dolphins, 737.5-563.5, in a South Coast Swim Conference home dual team meet Saturday.

For Newport Hills, Taylor Cortens set a team record and pool record in the 7- and 8-year-old boys’ 25-yard breaststroke (19.19 seconds). Cortens also established a team record of 32.23 in the 7-8 boys’ 50 freestyle.

The 6-and-under girls’ group of Madison Strasmann, Emily Ritner, Ashley Humphreys and Lauren Openshaw posted a pool record of 1:22.45 in the 100 freestyle relay.

On the boys’ side, the 7-8 squad of Nick Schroeder, Taylor Cortens, JT Russell and Mitch Dean also set a pool record in the 100 free relay (1:02.23).

The boys’ 6-and-under and 7-8 age divisions were dominant for Newport Hills. Henry Wilde won the 25 free and 25 butterfly for Newport Hills in 6-and-under competition, in which Morgan Cortens won the 25 breaststroke and 25 backstroke.

In 7-8 boys’ competition, Taylor Cortens won the 50 free and 25 breaststroke, while Nick Schroeder won the 25 free and 25 fly.

Alex Wilde was a three-time winner for the Newport Hills 9-10 boys’ in the 50 free, 50 back and 100 individual medley.

The Killer Whales’ Patrick White also won three times in the 15-18 boys’ division, topping the field in the 50 free, 50 fly and 50 back.

On the girls’ side, Leah Givant won the 25 breaststroke and 25 fly in the 6-and-under division.

In the 9-10 division, Lauren Dean was a two-time winner in the 25 fly and 100 IM.

Setting personal-best times and winning their events for the Newport Hills boys were Morgan Cortens (6-and-under 25 breaststroke and 25 back); Henry Wilde (6-and-under 25 fly); Taylor Cortens (7-8 division 25 breaststroke and 50 free); Nick Schroeder (7-8 division 25 fly); Alex Wilde (9-10 division 50 free and 100 IM); Andrew Larsen (9-10 division 50 breast); Christian Garkani (11-12 division 50 free); Richie Barden (11-12 division 100 IM); Anthony Daboub (11-12 division 50 back); and Scott Sanford (15-18 division 100 IM).

Posting season-best times for the Newport Hills girls were Lauren Openshaw (6-and-under 25 free); Elizabeth Russell (9-10 division 50 back); Lauren Dean (9-10 division 100 IM); Hollace Barden (11-12 division 50 free); and Anna Palchikoff (15-18 division 100 IM).
