Sampras wins, but team falls

MAMARONECK, N.Y. ? Pete Sampras notched his first singles victory of the season, but the Newport Beach Breakers fell to the New York Sportimes, 21-10, Wednesday night at Sportime Stadium in Harbor Island.
Sampras recorded five aces en route to a 5-1 win over Alex Bogomolov Jr., but it marked Newport Beach’s only victory of the night against New York (8-2).
Sampras wasn’t so successful in doubles. He teamed with Rick Leach to lose in men’s doubles, 5-0, and he teamed with Tina Krizan to fall in mixed doubles, 5-1.
Anastassia Rodionova lost 5-4 to Ashley Harkleroad in women’s singles and teamed with Krizan to lose, 5-0, in women’s doubles.
The Breakers, who fell to 4-5, are scheduled to make up their match against the Philadelphia Freedom tonight.
