District to hold public hearing

The Huntington Beach City School District will hold a public hearing at 6 p.m. Tuesday during the regular board meeting so residents can put in their two cents before the district and the Huntington Beach Elementary Teachers Assn. negotiate their collective bargaining agreement for the next school year.

The district plans on adding language to the agreement that requires teachers who use extended leaves to provide verification from a doctor and will delete a section regarding sabbatical leave, according to the district.

Personal business leave and the use of teacher planning days will also be discussed, according to the district.

KOCE-TV files appeal

The KOCE-TV Foundation, which acquired Orange County’s only public television station in a controversial sale two years ago, filed an appeal Wednesday against a recent court decision that declared the sale invalid.

Last week, the Coast Community College District, which sold the channel to the found- ation in 2004, filed its own appeal against state Supreme Court Judge David Sills’ decision. In May, Sills ruled against the district, saying that it wrongly spurned a higher cash bid by the Daystar Television Network, a Christian broadcaster that attempted to buy KOCE.

Daystar, the district and the foundation have been in the court system for the past three years.

In the foundation’s appeal, its attorneys argued that the district would have had to reimburse the Corporation for Public Broadcasting if it sold the station to a non-PBS affiliate and faulted Daystar for not agreeing to provide 40 hours of telecourses per week.
