VANGUARD’S DAVIS ON BOARD
Vanguard University women’s basketball coach Russ Davis has been elected to the Board of Directors for the Women’s Basketball Coaches Assn.
The 27-member board, members of which serve a three-year term, is comprised of coaches and professors from NCAA Division I, II and III schools, as well as NAIA programs.
Davis guided the Lions to a 31-2 record and a berth in the semifinals of the NAIA Division I Championships, where they were upset by Lubbock Christian, 69-59.
Vanguard won its fourth straight Golden State Athletic Conference regular-season championship and its seventh under Davis, who is 259-76 in 10 seasons at the Lions’ helm.
UCI’S RANGEL RECOGNIZED
Steffin Rangel, a senior on the UC Irvine men’s volleyball team last season, was named to the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Academic All-Conference team.
Rangel, a reserve outside hitter, helped the Anteaters win the program’s first MPSF regular-season crown and advance to the four-team NCAA championships.
DOG WASH FUNDRAISER
An AYSO Region 57 girls under-12 soccer team is holding a dog wash today to raise money for its upcoming trip to the National Games in Chicago.
The event is from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Eastbluff Park in Corona del Mar.
Cost is $10 per wash.
The team is also seeking sponsorship for the trip, which has an estimated cost of $17,000.
