Davises move to quarters
NEWPORT BEACH ? Corona del Mar resident Scott Davis and his father, Gordon Davis, advanced to the quarterfinals of the 12th annual United States Tennis Assn. national father and son hardcourt doubles championships at the Newport Beach Tennis Club.
The No. 1-seeded Davis duo, which has won five tournament titles in the last six years at NBTC, had a first-round bye in the super-senior division (fathers age 70 and older).
The Davises then defeated Mike and Herman Ahlers, 6-3, 6-0, in the round of 16 on Friday. They advance to face Raymond and Matthew Bogdanowicz today at 10:30 a.m. The semifinals follow at 2 p.m.
In the seniors division (fathers ages 60-69), Newport Beach residents Michael and Allan Carter advanced and No. 3-seeded Devin and Bart Bowen of Costa Mesa had a first-round bye.

Fabian and Oscar Matthews of Newport Beach fell in the first round to Michael and William Dunkle, 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
Rick and Dick Leach, the No. 1 seed in the seniors division, had a first-round bye and will take on Robert and Alan Croll of Beverly Hills in the quarterfinals today at 10:30 a.m.
Rick Leach, a former USC standout, will play this season for the Newport Beach Breakers, a World Team Tennis franchise coached by his father.
