Poll workers best voters

Much has been made during Newport-Mesa’s recent run of elections about potential voter fatigue setting in ? a fit of exhaustion that seemed to be proved true as turnout kept hovering at alarmingly low levels.

If only voters had the poll workers’ stamina.

A story published in Wednesday’s Daily Pilot found the very opposite of burnout among volunteers at the Balboa Island fire station polling place. Ellis Morcos, 79, proudly announced he’d worked every general election since Ronald Reagan was president. (By our count, that’s at least 10.)

“That’s part of me. I just do it ? I guess because nobody else wants to do it,” he told the Pilot.

If voters keep up, he may end up casting their ballots for them too.

With their enthusiasm and their dedication to the democratic process, the poll workers deserve a big thanks for making sure elections go smoothly.

Voters even have five months to rest up before delivering it.
