Rain cancels games

While Wednesday’s scattered showers were an improvement on Tuesday’s conditions, a handful of area high school sports contests were still canceled.
Five high school games were postponed or canceled Wednesday.
Estancia High’s softball and baseball games were both postponed and, with spring break looming next week, the make-up date has yet to be determined. Softball Coach Alan Caouette hopes to make up the game at Golden West League opponent Westminster on May 5, but nothing is certain.
“[The rain] has affected us so far,” Caouette said of his Eagles (5-3, 2-1 in league). “We’re playing pretty well, so they’re pretty bummed about it.”
Estancia baseball Coach C.K. Green said he needed to talk with Westminster Coach Mike Kelly before determining a make-up date for the Eagles’ home game.
“It might be a while,” Green said. “Definitely at least a couple of weeks.”
Meanwhile the team has kept busy using the gymnasium as a baseball diamond, using tennis balls instead of baseballs.
“It’s been fun,” Green said. “It’s been raining the past couple of days, so they kind of expected it.”
Newport Harbor’s baseball team, which was set to hit the road to play Foothill on Wednesday, will instead do so April 20 at 3:15 p.m. Foothill owns sole possession of first place in the Sea View League standings with a record of 10-2, 5-1 in league. The Sailors will still receive an opportunity to knock the Knights from the top Friday, when Newport Harbor hosts Foothill at 3:15 p.m.
Costa Mesa postponed its softball game at home versus Ocean View until April 17 at 3:15. The Mustangs (2-10, 0-4 in league), with spring break next week, will have to wait until then to attempt to win its first Golden West League game of the season. Costa Mesa hosts San Mateo Serra in a nonleague game Friday at 3:15 p.m.
Corona del Mar’s boys’ tennis match at home against Santa Margarita was the only high school event of the day not being rescheduled, because it was a nonleague match. The Sea Kings will pick up the rackets today, weather permitting, and travel to Irvine to face University in a Pacific Coast League match.
In other scheduling news, Corona del Mar’s baseball game today against Laguna Beach will be at home at 3:15 p.m., rather than at Laguna Beach. The Sea Kings will play at Laguna Beach on Friday.
