The Newport Harbor High junior varsity club roller hockey team opened the Interscholastic Hockey Federation A Division playoffs with a 7-0 victory over Tesoro on Wednesday at the California Roller Hockey Center in Irvine.
Newport Harbor, seeded No. 1, won the regular-season title with a 13-1-1 record, and will compete in the semifinal match Monday night. Should the Sailors win Monday, they would play in Wednesday’s championship.
The coed team, coached by Jim Irwin, is made up of seniors Rory Campbell, Sarah Taylor and goalie Colin Meatzie; juniors Christy Jenkins and Peter Do; sophomores Kurt Newmeyer, Ryan Panella, Josh Jobse and Cameron Monahan, the leading scorer; and freshman Richard De St. Jean.
The Interscholastic Hockey Federation includes teams from more than 20 high schools around Orange County.
