Lions share fish-fry funds with community groups

Local organizations shared in the proceeds from the 2005 Costa Mesa Newport Harbor Lions Club Fish Fry held in June.

“We distributed nearly $25,000 to the groups,” said club President Mike Scheafer at Tuesday night’s club meeting, attended by over 80 people.

Groups receiving checks from the Lions Club included the Costa Mesa Historical Society, Southern California Lions Eye Institute, Project Look, 4L4 Sight and Hearing Foundation, the Boys and Girls Club of the Harbor Area, Westside Boys and Girls Club, Newport Harbor Culinary Arts, Estancia Baseball, Costa Mesa Baseball, Costa Mesa National and American Little Leagues, 4L4 Hearing and Speech Action Committee, Someone Cares Soup Kitchen, Save Our Youth, Youth Employment Service, Blind Children’s Learning Center, Costa Mesa Senior Center, Orange County Model Engineers Railroad, Shalimar Learning Center, Newport-Mesa Unified School District Project Success, Harbor Mesa Lions Club School Box Project, Australian Sister City students, Sea Scouts, Lions Camp at Teresita Pines, Talk about Autism, Foundation for the Junior Blind, Costa Mesa Pop Warner Football, Newport Mesa Schools Foundation, Lions in Sight and the Daily Pilot Cup Soccer.

This year’s fish fry is set for the weekend of June 3 and 4 at Lions Park in Costa Mesa.

“With the help of the Costa Mesa Community Foundation, we are hoping to bring back the Fish Fry Parade, if not this year, next year,” Scheafer said. “We are working at getting the fish fry back to three days so it can produce the kinds of funds for community groups that it used to.”

CRIME PREVENTION STANDOUTS

The Exchange Club of the Orange Coast honored top deputies at its recent crime prevention lunch at the Bahia Corinthian Yacht Club. Capt. J.B. Davis honored Sgt. Stu Rawlings as supervisor of the year, David Mitchell as jail deputy of the year, Kevin Navarro as patrol deputy of the year, Deputy Chris Corn as harbor patrolman of the year and Margaret Cady as civilian employee of the year.

All recipients were given plaques from the club and framed resolutions from the Orange County Board of Supervisors.

WALKATHON PLANNED FOR JUNE

Lutheran Social Services annual Walkathon will be held June 10 starting and ending at Newport Harbor Lutheran Church in Newport Beach, according to Sheena Jones, event coordinator. Registration begins at 7 a.m. and the walk starts at 7:30.

Proceeds from the walkathon will benefit needy families and the homeless in our communities. Jones said walkers and sponsors are still needed.
