UC Irvine junior guard Angie Ned was named Big West Conference Defensive Player of the Year by her women’s basketball peers.

Ned was a first-team all-conference selection after averaging 13.1 points, 4.5 rebounds and 1.4 steals to help the Anteaters finish 9-19. UCI was 7-7 in regular-season conference games, earning a tie for third place.

The Anteaters were defeated, 66-64, by Cal State Northridge in the first round of Big West Conference Tournament on Wednesday.

Ned is only the second UCI player to earn the distinction. Cindy Oparah was Defensive Player of the Year in 2002.

Voting was done by the conference’s players, who could not vote for teammates.dpt-ned13.IMGGraphicInfoT91OSK1O20060313T91OSK1ONo Caption
