Traffic stop ends in alleged drug bust
Officers who stopped a Newport Beach resident for a traffic violation late Thursday discovered two pounds of marijuana and a kilogram of hallucinogenic mushrooms in his pickup truck, Costa Mesa police said. t.
The stop occurred at 10:15 p.m. at Newport Boulevard and Broadway. Logan Carson, 23, said he had a small amount of marijuana after the officer smelled the drug, police said. Carson was taken into custody after a field sobriety test.
While searching Carson’s Ford Ranger, police found the marijuana and mushrooms in a suitcase.
Carson was taken to the Costa Mesa jail and booked for transportation and possession of dangerous drugs for sale, as well as for driving while impaired. His bail was set at $500,000.
A seizure of this amount of the mushrooms ? sometimes called “magic mushrooms” ? is uncommon, police said.
