Paddleball tourney today in Newport

The Newport Beach Athletic Club is hosting a doubles paddleball tournament today from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

The field will be made up of 16 players divided into eight teams. The players will be ranked, then grouped for maximum parity.

The tournament will be in round robin format, after which the teams with the two best records will play in the final. The winning team will receive a massage, lunch and a T-shirt.

Paddleball is played on a racquetball court with the same rules. A wooden paddle with holes is used in place of a racquet, changing the strategy because the ball does not bounce as hard.
