This is no walk in the park

By modern standards, the course at Newport Beach Country Club would be considered a throwback.
Originally designed by William Bell in 1952, the course has its scenic trees and rolling terrain and classic touches.
That’s not to say, however, it doesn’t know how to bare its fangs sometimes. Three redesigns ? one by Harry Rainville in 1973 and two by Ted Robinson in 1985 and 1998 ? have kept the course up to date and a challenge.
In previous years, club officials enjoyed pointing out that winning scores at the Toshiba Classic were consistently in the 10- to 12-under range. Hale Irwin’s 17-under par 196 in 2002 remains the lowest final score in tournament history, though Rodger Davis and Tom Purtzer made runs at that mark in 2003 and 2004.
With that in mind, here’s a look at what the PGA Champions Tour’s players will be facing at Newport Beach County Club:
HOLE: 1
PAR: 4
YARDAGE: 339
NOTES: It’s a relatively easy opening with a slight dogleg to the left. The green is two-tiered, making a good approach shot a must. Regardless, birdies can be made here:
HOLE: 2
PAR: 4
YARDAGE: 390
NOTES: This hole is not as easy as No. 1, but pars can still be plentiful here. A wide fairway leads to an uphill approach to the green.
HOLE: 3
PAR: 5
YARDAGE: 549
NOTES:Traditionally one of the easier holes on the course, No. 3 can be reached in two by some of the longer hitters on tour. Water comes into play on the left side, if players aren’t careful.
