UCI STANDOUT ON THE WEB
UC Irvine men’s basketball player Aaron Fitzgerald has been named the Big West Conference’s most valuable player by the website CollegeInsider.com.
Fitzgerald, a senior point guard, leads the Big West and is seventh in the nation in assists with 6.3 per game. He is averaging 12.1 points per game and leads the team in steals with 33.
The website tabbed Pacific’s Christian Maraker as Big West Player of the Year and Tigers’ Coach Bob Thomason as Coach of the Year.
OCC PRODUCT MAKES GOOD
Orange Coast College product Keinan Briggs was named Men’s Track and Field Athlete of the Week for the week ending Feb. 26 by the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.
Briggs, now at Cal State Los Angeles, qualified for the NCAA Division II championships with a triple jump of 51 feet, 1 inch at the Carl Rossi Relays. He also provisionally qualified in the 110-meter high hurdles, winning his heat in 14.39 seconds.
