Rain wreaks havoc

The first day of the season-opening, 54-team Newport Harbor Elks Lodge Tournament, which boasts all five Newport-Mesa area varsity baseball teams, was postponed for most teams on Friday due to rain.

Estancia High’s first-round home game in the tournament against Whittier Christian was rescheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. at Estancia High. The Eagles’ second-round game today against JSerra was changed from 10 to 11 a.m., also at Estancia High.

Corona del Mar’s first-round game against Paramount was rescheduled for Monday at 3 p.m. at Corona del Mar High. The Sea Kings’ second-round game today remains at La Serna at noon.

The Sage Hill baseball team’s first-round game against JSerra was rescheduled for today at 3 p.m., which will follow the Lightning’s regularly scheduled 10 a.m. game against Garden Grove Santiago. Both games are slated to take place at Sage Hill School.

A number of other high school athletic contests were canceled because of the weather. Estancia’s softball game against Santa Ana Calvary Chapel was postponed, as was the Eagles’ softball tournament, which was to start today. No rescheduled dates have been made, as of yet.

In addition, Vanguard University’s men’s tennis match Friday at UC Riverside had to be canceled, along with the Lions’ baseball doubleheader with Fresno Pacific scheduled for tomorrow. No makeup dates have been set for either game.
