Seahawks swoop to hoops titles

Ocean View boys’, girls’ teams top Golden West League standings.The regular season came to an end last week for prep winter sports teams in boys’ and girls’ basketball, boys’ and girls’ soccer and girls’ water polo.
In boys’ basketball action:
Ocean View earned a tie for the Golden West League title by defeating host Westminster, 64-35. Brad Sweezy scored 18 points, Diego Delgado 12 and Brandon Ishimoto 11 for the Seahawks, who recorded their second lopsided victory over the Lions this season.
Edison finished in second place in the Sunset League a year after sharing the league title with Los Alamitos. The Chargers prepared for the postseason with an 88-54 win over visiting Marina. Phillip Darin scored a game-high 20 points, Denny Reed 15, T.J. Lipold 14 and Thomas Marcin 10, as Edison completed a league sweep of the Vikings.
Sean Starkey netted 15 points, Mike Kinoshita 13 and Troy Lewis 10 for Marina.
Huntington Beach’s season came to an end with a 67-51 loss to visiting Esperanza. Brian Gee scored 20 points and Nick Becker 17 for the Oilers.
In girls’ basketball action:
Ocean View also won the Golden West League title in girls’ basketball. The Seahawks wrapped up an outstanding run in league play by walloping Westminster, 47-18. Josnique Thomas poured in 19 points to top the host Seahawks.
Marina put the finishing touches on a Sunset League championship by holding off visiting Edison, 49-48. It was the second straight league crown for the Vikings, who shared the 2005 title with Esperanza.
Rachael Maulit scored 13 points, Erin Barney 12 and Allison Budzinski and Lindsey Schulze each had 10 for the Vikings.
Wahine Kepilino scored 13 points and Loryn Kanemaru 12 for the Chargers.
Huntington notched its 20th victory of the year and earned a second-place tie with Esperanza in the Sunset standings after defeating the host Aztecs, 41-36, on the final night of the regular season. Rita Sitivi’s all-around performance included 12 rebounds and eight points and Jasmine Erving scored 11 points as the Oilers completed a league sweep of the Aztecs.
In girls’ soccer action:
With a CIF-Southern Section playoff berth awaiting the winner of the Edison-Marina matchup, the Chargers claimed that berth by defeating the host Vikings, 5-0.
And with both teams facing the possibility of having its season come to an end, Edison responded with a 5-0 victory over Marina to earn a CIF-SS playoff bid.
Senior Alex Dunn and freshman Ally Cerda scored early to give Edison a 2-0 lead, and Dunn went on to record a hat-trick for the Chargers.
Seniors Kaitlin Thulin, Elyse KIrmaci and Elysse VanLeer, sophomores Erica Hardway and keepers Keenan Castillo and Aylin Dermenci, and freshman Alexa Enlow, also made key contributions for Edison, whose players had the initials, “CIF,” painted on their arms.
