PHOTO OF THE WEEK ‘Smoke and lenses’
nowebWhen Staff Photographer Kent Treptow went out looking for wild art Tuesday, his plan was to try to frame a boat entering the harbor inside the sun. When he got there, he realized that the sun was setting behind Catalina Island at that angle, putting the island in the background of the photo.
Treptow then decided he needed a subject positioned above the horizon to get Catalina out of the shot. He noticed a fisherman walking out on the jetty.
With a 600 mm lens and a two-times converter, Treptow was able to create the equivalent of a 1,200 mm lens -- the effect he needed to frame the man in the setting sun.
The smoke in the air from the fire in northeast Orange County added some color to make for beautiful photograph.
