Lions’ OT luck runs out

Vanguard struggles in the extra period after winning three previous overtime affairs and loses to Point Loma Nazarene COSTA MESA -- The Vanguard University men’s basketball team’s luck in overtime contests came to a crashing end Tuesday night.

The Lions missed seven of nine field goals in overtime and lost to Point Loma Nazarene, 84-77, in a Golden State Athletic Conference game. The loss ended a six-game winning streak and dropped them into fourth place in conference after entering the game tied for second with Westmont and San Diego Christian.

Vanguard (15-9, 9-5 in conference) had won its previous three overtime games, but went scoreless after Horace Wormely’s basket with 1:58 remaining in the extra period. Xavier Lopez had five points and two assists for Point Loma Nazarene in overtime.

The Lions had two chances to win the game in regulation after the Sea Lions’ Casey Ortiz tied the score at 70-70 with a jumper. Leon Rosborough missed a shot with 22 seconds left and Vanguard was unable to get a shot off after Matt Benson missed two free throws with five seconds remaining in regulation.

Greg Gusiff scored 17 points, making five three-pointers, for Vanguard, which led by as many as 14 points in the second half. Levi Seekins added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists, and Horace Wormely added 15 points and eight assists.

Lopez led Point Loma Nazarene (13-8, 8-6) with 24 points and had nine rebounds and five assists.
