TOURNEY OPENS FRIDAY
The Newport Beach Tennis Club is hosting a tennis tournament for high school students starting Friday.
The first annual High School Spring Tennis Championships, which will boast events in boys’ and girls’ singles, doubles and mixed doubles, opens Friday at 7 p.m. with the first round of boys’ singles, continues on Saturday at noon and concludes with finals action in each division on Sunday at 2 p.m.
The tournament is open to any high school student, whether or not they are on a high school tennis team.
Players who are on high school teams must sign up individually, as prep coaches are not allowed to sign up their entire teams for this out-of-season event.
Sage Hill’s Robert Wee, Sarah Geocaris and Allie Hsu are among the many Newport-Mesa area tennis players slated to compete.
The entry deadline is today. Forms can be picked up at any Orange County tennis facility, or you can e-mail Longoria at [email protected] to request one.
SAILORS REUNITE
Former Newport Harbor High football coach Ernie Johnson has been described as having turned “a bunch of surf rats into winners.”
Johnson will be on hand at Newport Harbor’s Class of 1971 reunion at The Cannery on 3010 Lafayette Road in Newport Beach on Saturday at 3 p.m.
Anyone interested in attending can call Alvin White at (949) 757-0030.
