AT ISSUE: Which applicant should the Newport Beach City Council appoint to its ranks tonight?I urge the appointment of Dolores Otting to the vacant Newport Beach City Council seat. She may be our best hope to exert some local control over the rehab businesses that are appearing in the city because local zoning laws are not being enforced.

I support Dolores Otting to replace John Heffernan on the City Council. We need her civic knowledge and experience on the council. We also need a balance on the City Council where viewpoints of all the residents of Newport Beach are represented, and it’s my opinion that she could help to provide this balance.

I urge the City Council to appoint Dolores Otting as the obvious choice of the electorate to replace John Heffernan. This was shown by the voters in the last election.
This choice would help to show the residents of Newport Beach that we really do have a City Council that believes in representative government.
I feel that Otting will bring points of view to the council that will have merit and create a balance of fiscal responsibility and environmental soundness. And there will be enough time for the electorate to observe her conduct and effectiveness in these matters before the election in November.

Dolores Otting has earned the right to appointment to the City Council of Newport Beach by her consistent efforts on behalf of the city’s residents over a period of many years. Otting has attended virtually every City Council meeting, asking questions about the city’s policies and programs in order to inform herself and the general public, directing comments to the council in order to give voice to community concerns about public safety, planning, traffic, budget and a host of other issues.
In the last general election she ran a close second to John Heffernan, whose resignation now gives rise to the council’s fourth appointment in the past few years. When the council makes the appointment, Newport Beach deserves as its representative a person who received some 15,000 votes when she ran for the seat just over a year ago. The council should show its respect for the voters by appointing Otting.

Of the five applicants, we support Dolores Otting to replace John Heffernan on the Newport Beach City Council. We need her civic knowledge and experience on the Council. We also need a balance on the City Council where all viewpoints are represented, and she will provide this balance.
