Wrestlers moving on

Corona del Mar and Newport Harbor will send nine to CIF individual tournaments.Five wrestlers from Newport Harbor High and four from Corona del Mar have qualified for the CIF Southern Section individual tournament after finishing in the top three at their league meets Saturday.

At the Pacific Coast League finals, Corona del Mar had three second-place finishers -- Ian Hogan (171 pounds), Max Prescott (215) and Felipe Almarez (heavyweight). Bejan Ahmadi took third for the Sea Kings at 152 pounds.

“I was pretty happy with how it went,” Corona del Mar Coach Gary Almquist said. “It went about as good as I could have expected.”

Newport Harbor’s Brian Beaudette was second in the heavyweight division at the Sea View League finals. Zane O’Bourke (103), Josh George (130), Craig Nordstrom (145) and Bryan Bennett (215) had third-place finishes for the Tars.

Sailors Coach Dominic Bulone said it was his team’s best showing in seven years.
