Edison kickers booted by Los Alamitos

Los Alamitos converts foul shots to down Edison, 3-2, in boys’ soccer.Visiting Los Alamitos converted a pair of penalty kicks in quick succession in the second half of Friday’s showdown with Edison, and the Griffins used those two scores to post 3-2 victory over the Chargers.

Both teams came into the match with a 3-0 league record.

Edison tied the match, 1-1, on a goal by senior forward Curtis Taniguchi in the first half, and a header by senior forward Jimmy Walker gave the Chargers a 2-1 edge at the half.

Junior Dane Kaylor had three saves.

Previously, Edison kept Fountain Valley winless in league action by taking a 3-1 match from the Barons. Walker, Taniguchi and Nick McEachin scored for the Chargers.

In another Sunset League match, Huntington Beach needed overtime to slip past visiting Fountain Valley, 1-0.

Junior defender Dirk Petersen scored the lone goal, and Carlos Alberto Hernandez finished with five saves.

The Oilers also shut down Marina, 4-0, getting goals from Kyle McAthy, Christopher Sauter, Alex Sanders and John Shinjo.

In girls’ soccer:

Edison has found the going tough in Sunset League play. Following losses to Esperanza (4-0) and Fountain Valley (2-1), the Chargers suffered a 4-2 loss to Los Alamitos.

The Griffins jumped out to a 3-0 lead before Edison cracked the scoreboard when senior Alex Dunn posted a goal to make it 3-1. Three minutes later, teammate Brenna Boies took a corner kick and sent it to Jordan Crumby, who scored to cut the deficit to 3-2. That rally ended when the Griffins converted a corner kick to close out the scoring.

Marina also notched a victory in Sunset play by blanking Esperanza, 2-0.

In girls’ water polo:

Edison’s Laurel Newman scored the game-winning goal to push Edison past Huntington Beach, 6-5, in a Sunset League tripleheader at Huntington Beach High. Newman scored twice in the match, and teammates Katie Springer and Monique Wilson scored twice and once, respectively.

Kimberly Buksa led the Oilers with three goals.

In one of the other tripleheader matches, defending league champion Los Alamitos shut out Marina, 15-0.

Edison also destroyed Troy, 13-1, in nonleague action. Seven Chargers scored, with Jamie Bee, Katie Springer and Monique Wilson each netting three goals.

In another nonleague match, Marina fell to third-ranked (Division II) Villa Park, 10-1.
