School is evacuated
About 500 students at Huntington Beach’s College View Elementary School on Lennox Drive were evacuated early Friday after a custodian discovered two incendiary devices in the school.
Police received a call about the devices at 7:50 a.m. Students were quickly evacuated and taken by bus to Spring View Middle School, and parents were notified by an automated phone system to pick them up there, Huntington Beach Police Lt. Mike Reynolds said.
The custodian found a liquid-filled soda bottle taped to a classroom door. While he was removing it from the school, he found another bottle, Huntington Beach Police Sgt. Chris Tatar said.
Next to the second bottle was a partially burned cell phone. In addition to police, Huntington Beach Fire officials and the Orange County Sheriff’s Department responded to the scene. The liquid in one of the bottles was found to be cleaning fluid, but officials have yet to determine the contents of the other bottle or identify who put the bottles in the school, Tatar said.
Huntington Beach Police Lt. Dave Bunetta said there are no suspects, but they are working with investigators from the Sheriff’s Bomb Squad. Police ask that anyone with any information call (714) 536-5951.
