Surf City teams earn places in polls

Edison boys are first in Division I soccer rankings; H.B. girls’ hoops team is 5th.The first CIF-Southern Section winter sports polls of 2006 were released Tuesday by the Southern Section office in Los Alamitos, and seven local teams were ranked.

In girls’ basketball, Huntington Beach was ranked fifth and Edison seventh in Division II-AA. The poll is headed by defending champion Troy, followed by Villa Park, Redondo and El Dorado.

Ocean View was ranked No. 13 in a Division III-AA poll led by Santa Margarita.

In boys’ basketball, Edison was No. 7 in Division II-AA. Mater Dei is ranked No. 1 in the division.

Ocean View came in at No. 11 in Division III-AA, where Artesia rests atop the poll.

Edison’s boys’ soccer team was ranked No. 1 in Division I. St. John Bosco of Bellflower tops the poll.

In girls’ water polo, Edison was ranked 10th in Division I. Foothill is ranked No. 1 in the division.

In girls’ soccer:

Marina won its Sunset League opener by blanking Fountain Valley, 1-0. Mariah O’campo scored the lone goal and Alex Panek three saves for the Vikings.

Esperanza was on its game as it blanked host Edison, 4-0, in the Sunset League opener for both teams.

In another opener, Los Alamitos defeated host Huntington Beach, 4-1. Sophomore Kim Copenhaver scored for the Oilers.

In boys’ soccer:

Marina won its 10th game of the season and first in Sunset League play by downing Fountain Valley, 4-1. Senior forward Juan Meza scored all four goals for the Vikings.

Edison ran its league mark to 2-0 and picked up its 14th win, by blanking visiting Esperanza, 2-0. Senior midfielder Nick McEachin scored both goals for the Chargers and junior Dane Kaylor had one save.

Huntington was blanked by Los Alamitos, 3-0.

In previous league action, Edison shut down Marina, 3-0. McEachin and senior forwards Jimmy Walker and Curtis Tanaguchi scored for the Chargers.

Kaylor had one save in notching the first of two shutouts during the week.

Huntington blanked Esperanza, 2-0, getting goals from junior forward Kyle McAthy and junior halfback Alex Sanders. Junior Carlos Alberto Hernandez had four saves.

In Golden West League play, Ocean View fell to Saddleback, 2-0.

In girls’ water polo:

Junior attacker Joanna Tiplea scored the only goal in overtime as Edison rallied to defeat Esperanza, 5-4.

It was the only goal of the match for Tiplea.
