Tough in the clutch

Edison’s Reed makes last-second three against Jserra.With a title on the line, Edison High’s Denny Reed delivered a shot that sank JSerra.

Reed nailed a three-point basket with two seconds remaining in the championship game of the Estancia Coast Classic to lift the Chargers past the Lions, 53-52, at Estancia.

The three gave Reed 14 points for the game, second only to teammate T.J. Lipold, who led all scorers with 17 points.

Tim Golden of the Chargers also was in double figures with 11 points.

Edison trailed, 27-25, at the half, in a game where neither team could pull away.

En route to the tournament title, the Chargers also defeated Corona del Mar, 68-50, behind 17 points from Lipold, 16 from Thomas Marcin, 15 from Reed and 12 from Golden.

Another victim was Robert Service of Alaska, which fell to Edison, 56-21. Lipold scored 16 and Marcin 10 to lead 11 players in the scoring column for the Chargers, who raced to a commanding 35-4 halftime lead.

Edison entered play this week with a 13-1 record.

In other boys’ basketball action:

Huntington Beach traveled to Florida and opened up play at the KSA Tournament in Orlando with two victories.

Nick Becker scored 11 points in a 58-32 romp past Maypearl of Texas, and Becker had 20 more and Greg Bartolme 13 as the Oilers rallied past Abingdon of Virginia, 54-50.

At the Century Holiday Classic, host Century used a three-point shot by Orlando Isais to hand Ocean View a 63-61 defeat in the third-place game of the tournament.

Brade Sweezy scored 19 points and Diego Delgado 11 for the Seahawks, who also scored a 45-44 victory over Cypress in the quarterfinal round. Sweezy and Broxton Dawson each had 11 in the win over the Centurions.

Also at the Century Holiday Classic, Pacifica held off Marina, 63-54, in the 13th-place game. Garrett James scored 15, Sean Starkey 14 and Mike Kinoshita 13 for the Vikings.

Marina also fell to Santa Ana, 51-44. Starkey led all scorers with 24 points.

In girls’ basketball:

In consolation round action at the Larry Doyle Orange County Championships, host Marina fell to El Dorado, 56-40, in a battle between two of the county’s top-ranked teams. Erin Barney led the Vikings with 12 points.

In an earlier game, Marina dropped a 51-24 decision to eventual tournament champion Sana Margarita in quarterfinal round play. The Vikings had begun the tournament with a 51-40 win over Pacifica.

In other consolation round action at the tournament, Edison held off Thousand Oaks, 51-49. Wahine Kepilino scored 13, Sarah Schmidt and Kelly Peterson 11 each and Simone Ibbotson 10 for the Chargers.

Edison also was defeated by San Clemente, 70-60, in a quarterfinal round matchup. Ibbotson had 16 points, Kepilino 12 and Sarah Schmidt 11 for the Chargers.

Kepilino had 15 points and Peterson 11 during Edison’s tournament-opening 50-45 win over Capistrano Valley.

At the Excalibur Tournament in San Diego, Huntington Beach picked up victories over Mission Hills, 58-51, and Burbank, 43-32, en route to a fifth-place finish at the tournament.

Guards Noe Viloria and Rita Sitivi each scored 14 points in the win over Mission Hills, and Viloria had a game-best 16 in the triumph over Burbank.

The Oilers also defeated Vista Del Lago, 57-35, with Sitivi netting 17 points.

In girls’ soccer:

Edison easily handled Redlands, 6-0, in the first-round of the Excalibur Tournament.
