Burgner tops eight Sea Kings honored

Defensive end Matt Burgner, a three-time first-team honoree, highlights CdM’s five first-team selections.Corona del Mar High senior defensive end Matt Burgner has been named first-team All-Pacific Coast League for the third straight season.

Burgner, whose 12 sacks this season gave him 36 for his varsity career -- tops in Sea King annals, topped eight Corona del Mar players named all-league by league coaches.

Joining Burgner on the first team were seniors Matt Loyd, Shaun Mohler, and John Fairbanks, as well as junior Steve Hillgren.

Loyd, a tailback, was the Sea Kings’ lone first-team honoree on offense. He rushed for 1,336 yards and 13 touchdowns on 174 carries.

Mohler, an inside linebacker who earned second-team laurels as a junior, led the Sea Kings with 113 tackles.

Fairbanks, who split time at end and noseguard, finished with 79 tackles, including five sacks.

Seniors Avery Fenton (offense) and Andrew Williamson (defense) represented Corona del Mar on the second team, as did junior offensive guard Arion Lapuz.

Fenton, a tight end, has committed to continue his career next season at Cornell.

Corona del Mar finished 6-6, 3-3 in league, and advanced to the CIF Southern Section Division IX quarterfinals.

Tesoro, which won the league title and went on to claim its second straight CIF Division IX crown, dominated the top individual honors. Titans senior tailback Sean Calcagnie was named Player of the Year. Senior quarterback Todd Sciacqua was the Offensive Most Valuable Player and senior Taylor Jones was the Defensive Most Valuable Player.200512237C1M9UJGNo Caption
