Team takes Thursday league; Tuesday champ Sandpiper suffers first loss.Thursday belongs to Compound Fractures.
By finishing the regular season with a flurry, Compound Fractures was able to capture the Thursday League championship in the city of Laguna Beach Community Services Department’s slow-pitch softball program.
Compound Fractures won its final three games, capped by an 8-5 victory over the Hamstring that gave the team the undisputed title.
A loss in the final game would have meant a shared championship with league rival Puswatrkylegs.
Puswatrkylegs finished one game behind Compound Fractures in the standings.
Thursday League
Compound Fractures 8, Hamstrings 5
Steve Hurst belted three solo home runs in three plate appearances and William Maniaci hit two homers in two at-bats to highlight a potent Compound Fractures offense.
Also hitting home runs were Erik Nelson, Jimmy Quintana and David Strong. Russell Swarts hit a par of singles.
Rob Malone delivered dramatics at the plate for the Hamstrings with a grand slam. Andrew Marriner hit a solo home run, and Vick Forreira, Pat Field and Mark Christy each singled twice.
Compound Fractures secured the win by hitting five consecutive home runs in the fifth inning. The Hamstrings battled back by scoring five runs in the top of the sixth.
Puswatrkylegs 15, Pancakes 0
Puswatrkylegs stayed in title contention by routing the Pancakes with an 18-hit attack.
Justin Westgaard had a home run and two singles, Vince Marconi a double and single and John Reynard a home run and single.
Jesse Westgaard held the Pancakes to just four hits, including a double by Adam Dalporto.
Hotwings 7, Courtesy Auto Body 6
The Hotwings overcame a 6-4 deficit by scoring the game’s final three runs to finish in third place in the league standings.
Aaron Talarico’s solo home run in the final inning broke a 6-6 tie.
Trigg Garner slugged two homers, Bob Jameson had a home run and single and Jonathan Cohen a home run to aid the Hotwings’ cause.

Tuesday League
Ganahl Lumber 4, Sandpiper 3
John Campbell hurled an eight-hitter as Ganahl Lumber denied Tuesday League champion Sandpiper’s bid for a perfect season.
Robert Ponce hit a two-run double and Robert Bonn knocked in a pair of runs for Ganahl Lumber, which finished in a second-place tie with Team Viagra.
Chris Howell and Mica Brown hit solo home runs for Sandpiper, which had a nine-game win streak snapped.
Team Viagra 10, C-Dawgs 2
With this victory, Team Viagra won six of its final seven games to finish tied for second place with Ganahl Lumber.
Mike McKenzie had two home runs and three RBI and scored three runs to pace Team Viagra on offense. On the mound, David Mulvaney yielded just four hits.
Frank Ranieri homered for the C-Dawgs.
DUI Fighters 10, Red Rum 7
Home runs by Mike Jewell, Dave McCollum and Josh Stock accounted for six of the 10 runs scored by the DUI Fighters.
Andrew Brodrick singled twice for Red Rum.
